Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about his research, the case most likely held some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
