The US-based enterprise Waymo has declared that its self-driving cabs will be on offer for use on London's roads starting next year.

UK Capital Named as Leading European City for Autonomous Ride-Hailing.

London will be established as the pioneering European city to launch an autonomous taxi service, similar to those already operational in multiple US cities and four other American urban centers employing Waymo's innovative systems.

First Trials to Start with Trained Operators.

Waymo stated that its cars are presently en route to London and will start navigating on the capital's streets in the near future with trained human specialists behind the wheel.

The company – initially established as a derivative from Google's self-driving car initiative and part of the same parent group – explained it would scale up activities and work closely with the UK transport authorities and Transport for London to secure the necessary approvals to offer totally self-driving services by 2026.

Growing Involvement in Autonomous Mobility Across London.

Other companies, such as Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own strategies to pilot autonomous cabs in the capital next year.

This comes after the government officials confirming it would speed up rules permitting public trials to occur before laws allowing self-driving vehicles is enacted in full.

A broader deployment of autonomous taxis is anticipated in the UK after the related legislation fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo presently has ties to Britain after establishing its pioneering European research base in Oxford in 2019.

It is furthermore introducing offerings in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover eco-friendly cars, marking its only other existing venture outside the United States.

“Our experience shows how to effectively grow fully autonomous ride-hailing, and we are eager to extend the advantages of our systems to the UK,” stated Tekedra Mawakana, noting that the innovation was “enhancing transport security and mobility more available”.

Waymo launched its driverless cabs in 2020 and presently states it has carried over ten million riders in the United States.
