UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
