Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Declares Preparedness for Conflict-Time Elections After Comments from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated he is prepared to hold a presidential election during the current war, if Ukraine's parliament and foreign partners give their consent. This comment follows accusations from Donald Trump that he was holding onto his position.
Visibly annoyed by the remarks from overseas, Zelenskyy underscored that "This question for the people of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from foreign states, with all necessary respect to our allies."
However, he vowed to explore options for carrying out a vote in the next few months. "Given that this issue is brought up by the leader of the U.S., our key partner, I will respond briefly: look, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday night.
"In addition, I am calling on ... the U.S. to help me, possibly in conjunction with European colleagues, to guarantee security for the elections, and subsequently within the coming two to three months Ukraine will be prepared to hold the elections. I myself have the desire and willingness for this," he continued.
The U.S. President's Comments and The Country's Legal Reality
These remarks were voiced by Trump in a wide-ranging interview released by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "Ukraine have not held an election in a long time," stated the American leader. "Understand, they speak of a democratic nation, but it reaches a point where it's no longer democratic any more."
Zelenskyy's mandate came to an end in May of last year, but the nation's constitution bans elections in a time of wartime. Furthermore, his critics have often said that safety and political considerations do not permit organizing an election amid the ongoing conflict.
"Holding a vote would only be detrimental," stated a lawmaker from the Holos party. "Zelenskyy is the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a state where we lack that option, whatever disagreements we might have with him. It would only help the opponent," he added.
Logistical and Constitutional Challenges
Zelenskyy highlighted two key problems that must be resolved: the practical issue of allowing military personnel, the many displaced people, and those living under occupation to cast ballots, and secondly, how to legally conduct a vote given that martial law is active.
He sought counsel from allies on safeguarding the elections, and from MPs on how to change the constitution to allow a election. "{I am waiting for ideas from allies, I am waiting for ideas from our MPs, and I am ready to participate in the elections," stated Zelenskyy.
Wider Diplomatic Background
Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after completing a series of visits to several European capitals. This occurs while the U.S. administration has reportedly been applying pressure on Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire agreement.
Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed at a forum that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to worries of being ousted. He also indicated that his father might "withdraw support" from Ukraine if the conflict persists. "{It's not true. But it's not entirely wrong," commented Trump, when asked about his son's allegation.
Reports indicate that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should relinquish the Donbas region to secure peace, a move that would be deeply controversial within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is currently no evidence that Russia is ready to sign any agreement, even a deal that might appear advantageous to Moscow.
