This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
