The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
