Citizens have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future management of the territory

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."

"When we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Protester a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area reported additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics reported.
