The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story film debuted, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
