Obstacles Continue for Aid Distribution in Northern Gaza In Spite Of Ceasefire
Even if the access route at the Egyptian border opens in the coming days, relief agencies confront significant difficulties distributing supplies to the northern region, the territory worst hit by food shortages, analysts state.
Access Problems
Major routes are almost unusable due to massive destruction across the conflict-affected area – or continue to be controlled by military units. Any truck that stops working is almost certainly quickly plundered.
The primary crossing, the key gateway to the northern region, devastated by 24 months of conflict, has been closed for multiple weeks, and Israeli officials have informed NGOs in Gaza that there are no immediate plans to activate the entry location, per reports from humanitarian staff.
Destruction in Northern Territories
Gaza City was the objective of a significant armed campaign begun in August that was still under way when the peace agreement was signed recently.
Damage in the northern area has been extensive, with entire towns including urban centers and adjacent communities in devastated as well as many of the peripheral zones of the urban center.
"Any opening of a border point into Gaza is welcome, but we need to make sure we can help civilians where they are," said an experienced official from an international NGO.
Humanitarian Circumstances
Witnesses said many of the roughly 300,000 people who have come back to the northern area from the crowded shelter regions where they had been sheltering during the armed conflict were now "camping" among the debris of their homes, often without any protection and with scarce supplies or resources.
A spokesperson from a humanitarian body said the destruction in Gaza City was "devastating".
"It is neighborhood after neighborhood, home after home ... there is extreme need for water. It's pretty harrowing. We require all the crossings functioning," the spokesperson, who was in the urban center earlier this week, said.
Limited Entry
A community leader based in Gaza City said the needs in what used to be the region's bustling commercial and social center were "immense".
"There is hope and faith but there needs to be quick improvement on the border points. We haven't seen major improvement on the situation yet," the representative said.
"There remains a insufficient volume of support [and] we are only starting to grasp the level of devastation. So many streets are just full of debris ... there is scarcely a building that is secure. We see destruction and live explosives across the region."
Recent Developments
Recently, relief groups said small quantities of vital cooking gas came into Gaza for the first time in many weeks, along with consignments of flour, rice and farm products. The recent deliveries sent prices in markets decreasing.
Within a central community, a local resident said there had been certain progress since the ceasefire.
"The markets are stocked with products, produce, and fruits, although the prices are remaining elevated and not affordable for the entire population," the person said.
Cold Season Preparations
"The crucial necessities at present, especially with the coming of the cold season, are to have a temporary housing to shelter us from the cold and cold-weather clothing because the stores do not have sufficient clothing for us or, if they exist, they are extremely limited and extremely pricey."
Several UN-supported food preparation facilities in central and southern Gaza have begun working again since the truce.
Support Transport
Trucks were reported to have entered the humanitarian corridor via the eastern border to Gaza during recent days, though specific quantities were uncertain.
Israel's news organization stated that Wednesday's humanitarian shipments would include food, treatment resources, energy sources, propane and materials to fix crucial facilities.
"Relief supplies keeps coming into the Gaza territory through the border access point and alternative access points after Israeli security inspection," an Israeli security official stated.
Distribution Complications
But counting the volume of transports could be inaccurate, advised a specialist from an international NGO. "It's crucial to understand the contents of the trucks and their loading status for it to be a truly significant indicator," the expert added.
Commercial operators are dispatching fleets of trucks containing sweets, carbonated beverages and light food, which have minimal health benefits, while critical care for minors or others who have lacked proper sustenance for multiple years are scarce.
Healthcare Situation
Throughout the main city, only a handful of healthcare facilities are functioning, compared with numerous in earlier this year.
Many agencies have significant funding in assistance materials stockpiled around Gaza pending distribution. An international organization supporting local residents across the area for a long time has multiple months of supplies of nutrition for everyone in Gaza ready to be distributed.
"We maintain the supplies, the equipment and the capabilities ... we just need the access," said one aid worker, who recently came back from Gaza.
Governmental Aspects
A proposed plan details that "full" support should enter Gaza and be allocated through humanitarian bodies and relief organizations, without obstruction from both military groups or government forces.
This appears to exclude the controversial government-supported aid group which commenced activities in spring, resulting in chaotic scenes and multiple fatalities as large groups of people congregated around its aid locations.
