New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in areas where he holds significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,” Adams stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a heated candidate debate.
