Long-Forgotten Bach Compositions Performed for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years
Previously unknown organ compositions by the renowned composer Bach have been presented and executed in the central European country for the initial occasion in 320 years.
The nation's Minister of Culture the government representative labeled the unearthing of the two compositions a "great moment for the global music scene".
They first caught the attention of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was cataloguing historical musical documents at the Belgian royal collection.
The organ pieces - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor composition - were dating unknown and unsigned. The scholar spent the next 30 years working to authenticate the origin of the pieces.
Historic Performance
They were presented at the historic Leipzig church in the eastern German municipality, where the composer is buried and where he worked as a cantor for over two decades.
The two pieces were executed by Dutch organist the musical performer, who said he was honored to be able to perform them for the initial performance in over three centuries.
He said the pieces were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for contemporary organ players, as they are also well-suited for smaller organs".
Historical Significance
They are thought to have been created early in Bach's career, when he was working as an organ instructor in the town of the German town in Thuringia.
The researcher, who is now the director of the Bach Archive in the municipality, said they displayed several characteristics particular to the artist.
"Stylistically, the works also include aspects that can be found in Bach's works from that era, but not in those of other musicians," he said.
They are thought to have been transcribed in the early eighteenth century by a student of Bach, Salomon Günther John.
At a presentation of the compositions, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that the composer had created the pair of works" and they have now been incorporated into the authoritative listing of his musical output.
