Kalimuendo Fires as Forest Claim Sentimental Victory Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the ground as Forest followers celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's decisive header secured the continental trophy in 1979, but Forest continue to cherish those glorious moments. Equally, significant changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the European competition.
Building Momentum with Another Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any significant jeopardy or jitters.
It proved to be an event dripping in sentiment, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the teams since the showpiece event over four decades past.
The home side leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs shared a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically impressive tifo was unveiled in the home stand.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning display showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Start
So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an attempt wide inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It seemed appropriate that Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence led by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since March.
Second Strike Seals Dominance
Yates was involved in the team's next goal on the verge of the interval, as well, his unmarked header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned wide off the defender Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free the defender also earlier had a strong header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Malmö’s Difficulties
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they struggled to equal Forest’s energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the team that surprised the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they additionally netted three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the final period.
Smooth Evening for the Team
It proved a flawless night for Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the match long since sewn up and later brought on 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the club legends providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
