Jurgen Klopp admits a return to lead Liverpool is conceivable.
The German coach, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, remarked that a future comeback is an option. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-season tenure featuring Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title in 30 years, has since taken on roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
The club claimed England's top flight in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would be thrilled by the idea that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I refuse to lead a different club within the country. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...yes. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Questioned regarding the specific conditions would need to occur to draw him back to management, he confessed he isn't eager to such a return. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “No longing for management; I avoid standing under bad weather through long matches; No need for press conferences four times, three times a week or constant media duties weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the players having a nice chat, that’s nice. Success was frequent so there was often great spirits at the club. I can still hear the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, acknowledging his role due to the changes which secured the championship in the previous season. The team has suffered four consecutive matches across various tournaments following significant transfers, but he rubbished the notion it could be a slump.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. An outstanding player. The French striker, excellent performer. This is a well-built balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
He shared movingly about the death of Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, along with the consequences at the club. The Portugal international was killed in a vehicle collision with his brother in July.
“Who can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond the player himself, it's his character. It's hard to picture the dressing room missing him. I still cannot speak properly about it. It was an incredible shock for his teammates as well. Not a single person will ever use it to justify results but it is the situation. Being in that space where he was omnipresent. Handling this emotionally is difficult. Unbearable.”
