Oliver Forrest asks a pair of fascinating queries: “Who is the most prolific footballer with the initials XG?” and “Who has the highest combined contributions among players with the first letters GA?”
Leading XG Players
Out of the handful of male players worldwide with the first letters XG, Xenofon Gittas notched 17 scores throughout his professional journey, plus three for Greece Under-21s. But, he cannot match the scoring exploits of our winner, who netted 44 goals across every tournament, including the Europa League with clubs from Finland MyPa and Lahti. Unusually, in a period from 2019 to 2022, Gela was playing for Ekenäs while simultaneously coaching Esbo situated 80km away. Gela returned to manage the club in January of the current year, though not as a player.
Information on other XG players are limited. An Andorran defender stayed within the Andorran Primera Divisió, while a Spanish centre-back made one appearance in the third tier. Xavier García did score once in a World Cup qualifier against the Caribbean side. Geng Xiaofeng is perhaps the most recognized footballer with XG, but as a goalkeeper, he did not trouble the scorers.
GA Greats
When it comes to players with the initials GA, many have played worldwide. But if we narrow it to those who have appeared in the global tournament, two names stand out. Gerald Asamoah recorded 183 goals and assists (113 scores, 70 set-ups) over a 19-year playing days, though a lot of his final years were spent in lower leagues. But the winner is a Bulgarian legend. Known as the Artist, he netted 150 times in 247 domestic matches and was prolific in European games for his club. He also scored Bulgaria’s maiden World Cup goal in Chile at age 19. He scored 188 goals before his untimely passing in a vehicle accident at age 28.
Perhaps Asparuhov’s best-remembered strike was versus England at the famous stadium in December. Beginning in his own half, he outran the entire backline before slotting neatly into the bottom corner. A football knight later reflected, “Players as gifted as him are not born every day.” In 1999, Asparuhov was chosen the nation's best ever player over Hristo Stoichkov. We can only imagine how many additional goals he would have gone on to score.
Within the English top flight, the top contributions among GA footballers belongs to a former Aston Villa star with 108 (74 scores, 34 helpers).

The Hungarian Goal Question
All of the best scorers for the Magyars all concluded their careers in the 20th century,” observed an inquisitive fan. “What other national teams don’t have a top-10 scorer who has played in the 2000s?”
A dedicated researcher delivered the answer: not a single one. “After checking through every single national team history, I determined that there are no other nations without a leading ten goal producer who was active in the modern era. Three countries – the Southeast Asian side, another Asian team, and Poland – have 8 of their best ten from the 1900s.”
Regarding the Indonesian squad, their number three scorer – a retired star – and number five player Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto both played in the 21st century. Malaysia’s joint-sixth scorer an forward and eighth-highest a current player also appear in the current era.
The Polish national team's historical leading scorer is a global superstar, who is still playing and adding to his tally. Jakub Blaszczykowski is joint-ninth in the list. Some might say that the team of Niue have no goalscorers in the 2000s – actually, they have never scored ever in their only games.
Different Kits in the One Match
Following a recent question about teams using pieces of multiple different kits in one match, readers provided additional examples.
Mike Morris writes that in Manchester United's notorious ‘grey shirts’ match against their opponents, they used dark shirts, light shorts from their primary strip, and white socks from no kit. They changed to their third kit in the second half, resulting in elements of 4 different outfits.
A further case featured Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in 1957. Unable to swap kits due to a conflict, they borrowed blue shirts from Portsmouth and sported them during an FA Cup tie. Apparently it was a lucky charm as they went on to have their best ever cup run.
A London club had a policy in the mid-century that visiting sides could not wear the identical socks. Spurs frequently played at Stamford Bridge in white jerseys with gold socks.
In 2013, Barnsley had to purchase Crystal Palace's gold away kit from the club shop after the official ruled their usual colors unsuitable. They kept their red socks, resulting in taunts from the local supporters.
Another reader recalls a 1993 match where a famous team wore a newly designed strip with deep blue stripes. The opponents had to wear their blue change kit to avoid a color conflict.

Andrew Burrows once inquired about unique ways to settle matches or tournaments, citing a 50s final in Europe that was determined on set-pieces.
Paul Nash recalled the Anglo-Italian Cup from 1992-93. A team lost to West Ham on a official's coin toss after being level on points and net goals. Rovers were a coin flip away from qualifying to a European tournament.

Ian Golightly points out that a player scored a three goals for his club in 2025, while his dad the senior did the identical in two decades prior. Does anyone know of any additional cases of a father and son both scoring a hat-trick for the one club?
James Bolle observes that on a recent matchday, 8 games took place in London, making up 19% of all league fixtures. Has there ever been a greater proportion of professional games in one city? Also, with many based teams competing at home, it was a particularly London-centric day.
An enthusiast writes about a famous club establishing a top-flight record by winning 4 straight games with late goals. Were there ever five or more such victories in a row in the old First Division era or elsewhere?
A concerned supporter notes that the two Steel City teams are struggling in the second tier. If they are relegated, it would be the initial time the two have gone down in the same season. Has a city ever have this occur before? Also, which relegation trio have had the closest geographical spread?
