The daughter of ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she posted on social media four years ago during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her dad.

A seven-day period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, caused at least three hundred killed and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and is charged with allegations of encouragement to commit terror acts and public violence.

Context of the Legal Matter

The demonstrations were focused in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has consistently refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also repeatedly claimed the allegations against her were an bid to resolve political disputes with her parent after he founded his own political party and competed against the African National Congress.

Support and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the previous head of state and his relatives.

A few of followers from her group, the political party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials attended the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have compelling evidence for a conviction.

Central Elements of the Case

  • Online posts from the past form the core of the prosecution's argument
  • Deadly demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in major fatalities and financial damage
  • The individual on trial faces multiple allegations of provocation to violence
  • Court hearings are expected to carry on for several court sessions

The court case continues as all parties present their cases before the court in what is expected to be a highly monitored legal battle with substantial policy implications for South Africa.
