Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the ongoing speculation about his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Tensions After Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments come in the wake of he described a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had sparked widespread speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back ahead of schedule, possibly in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has become increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could impact what has up to now been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting position is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a favourable European position with strong results in their remaining games.
The prevailing question is whether this off-field situation might begin to affect a squad that was just starting to appear settled.
