Astronaut Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

Amanda Nguyen, a women's health researcher, was a passenger on the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
