Arne Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Loss
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's expected for doubts to be asked about his position after another convincing defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's worst run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got a lot of support from management,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to turn it around and secure a win of course but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my situation. It is not the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Club Management
Upon being questioned to provide details on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I feel the trust. However I've not talked to them since this game so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Issues and Player Reaction
The manager expressed regret over familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their European loss, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It is not good enough. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's tough because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a phase of this nature with outcomes this poor.”
He finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And until that badge is gone, we'll continue to compete.”
“We’re going to try to help the side back to where it needs to be, show everyone once more the values of this club and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
