Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded UK Gear to Track Down Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind confidential technology permitting the militant group to track down local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the data leak were advised to relocate and switch their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a serious disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to move to the UK to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file containing private information, including identities, contact details and occasionally family information, was accidentally leaked by an official stationed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident became known in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers do not have the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can trace your exact position. That's precisely what the unit achieved.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, Person A confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Data Breach

Preliminary research presented to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty relatives and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.

A gag order regarding the leak was enacted in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the aid group associated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate if they could and switched their contact details. That constituted the two main details that, should militant forces acquired such data, would cause them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that government assessment carried out by a former official had been mistaken to determine that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

She detailed horrific treatment experienced by concerned people, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
