Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster last day of play.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
