A comprehensive search and rescue effort is presently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailboats transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine total sailors, per a military release.

The vessels had been expected to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures widespread power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Broader International Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of power shortages.

Political measures have increased lately, with comments from various officials underscoring the complex nature of bilateral relations.

In response to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its disposal to locate the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
